Let me tell you what I think probably happened to generate this long-standing myth.

The early Internet pioneers discovered ways to make automated income. They realized this was a wonderful thing and began to spread the news to everyone they knew. Then, however, those unscrupulous types (you know... the jerks) saw this as an easy way to make a fast buck. They began preaching that making automated income online was as easy as pouring yourself a glass of water. In essence, they told half the story. As more and more people tried to make a living online and failed, the promise of making money while you sleep became fiction instead of fact.

So How Do You Do It?
What's the real truth? How can you make a full-time living online just like me? There are several ways. Let me give you the unvarnished gospel when it comes to online business. You may not like what you hear, but it is fact, not fluff.

ACTION STEP 1
Plan, Plan, Plan - It won't happen overnight. Nothing good ever does. In the beginning, you're going to create a plan then be ready to work that plan. You often hear about throwing up a website and making money while you sleep. Technically, yes, that's all there is to it. But... how does that site get up on the 'Net?

You have to create your site or have someone else create it. That means you have to take the time to learn professional website development (PLEASE, don't create some junky, homemade-looking site!), or you have to pay someone who already knows how to create websites. And what will you have on your site? Your own products? (Having your own e-products is highly recommended.) Someone else's products? You'll need to decide before your site is created.

How will people pay for the products they buy from your site? Do you have a merchant account? Will you become an affiliate for someone else so you don't need a payment system?

Will you go for high search engine rankings or rely on word-of-mouth, PPC ads, and other types of paid advertising? If you want good search engine optimization, you'll have to plan for that upfront. Again, you'll have to take time to learn how to do it or pay someone else who already knows how.

Before you take one more step toward launching your own Web business, find the answers to the questions above.

ACTION STEP 2
Be Ready to Work - Once your site is ready to launch, how will people find you? How, exactly, will you drive qualified visitors to your site? Will you use organic (free) search engine listings? Will you use Pay-Per-Click search engine ads? Will you buy ezine ads? Do you have other means for getting customers to visit your site? People won't just come out of the blue, you'll have to bring them to your site somehow.

Even if you choose to go for the organic search engine listings, you'll have about a 4-week to 4-month wait before seeing your new site listed. What will you do in the meantime to drum up business?

ACTION STEP 3
How Will You Keep It Going? - Prosperous businesses are continually growing to keep up with customer demands. How will you keep your online business moving forward? Will you do research into what consumers want? Will you guess? Will you just follow the crowd?

You'll want to have some method for gauging customer responses so you can know what your site visitors want and how to provide it for them.

One such way is to use Survey Monkey (www.surveymonkey.com). You can create online surveys in order to keep up with the needs/wants of your site visitors.

ACTION STEP 4
Service Is Key! - In order to make it in the long run, you simply must provide exceptional customer service to your clients. Those who lie, steal, cheat, or hide are destined to fail.

Understand this: Your success depends on your customers' success. If they aren't happy, you won't be in business long. Make every effort to treat them as the kings and queens they are.

See? The people who turned the "make money while you sleep" fact into fiction did so because they skipped all the important information. Now that you know what to expect, you can see that it is most definitely possible to make a full-time living online. It is even possible to make money while you sleep. However, you must have a plan, be ready to work, look for ways to keep your business growing, and treat your customers as true V.I.P.s.

Asset four: Advertising/marketing dollars: It is always a good idea to have money saved for your marketing/advertising campaign. Sometimes you will have to pay to drive traffic to your site. Traffic, is basically the count of individuals that come across your website. You will need targeted people to come so that they can check out what you are offering and hopefully purchase a thing or two.

Costs: Around $400-$500 USD for starters.

Before you invest all of the time and money into developing a product, you had better make sure that people are looking for information about what your about to sell. How do you determine this? Simple, you play with the keywords in the search engines. Contrary to belief, you want to target niches that have a lot of competition in them. Where there is lots of competition for a niche that tells you that this niche is established. When a niche is established that tells you that you can dig your own hole in the area and make some money for yourself. Once you find a good niche then you can get an idea on the type of product you want to sell. You should try to find your usp (unique selling proposition). Step 3: Premarketing

This is a huge mistake that I made in the past so do not do it yourself. That was simply waiting to do all of the marketing once my product was finished. No,no.no. You should always be doing the marketing before your product is released so you can build brand awareness and anticipation about your product before it is out. Just think about it, have you ever saw a movie come out and then release their trailers? Of course not, they always have their trailers weeks, and months before it’s officially out. You want to work on driving traffic to your website before its out, and capture the individuals names and emails so that they can be notified of your product once its out. Of course you should always work hard on generating traffic to your website once its out, but to get things rolling you should always build anticipation about your product before its live. Just look at a lot of showbiz believe it or not to see how they do their prerelease marketing, its very cleverly done.

Step 4: Follow through

Make sure to follow your business plan through! Before your website is done and has everything that it needs, you should try your hardest to stick with your business plan. Set money goals, and how much time that you plan to achieve them in. There is a high chance that things will not go 100% the way you attended it to, but try to bounce back and adjust once plans go off stray. Complex algorithms don not create the rankings, they just reflect the value the sites received from human beings. Directory reviewers are without any doubt part of it.

What I’ve noticed the last few months; google has managed to really ‘understand’ what the directory owners 1 by 1 are up to. And those that used ‘smart’ tricks got their asses kicked. While most of the quality directories haven’t changed much. But, most of the fake-directories, networks, link-farms, mailing traps, and a whole bunch more sites that have no other intention, but to parasite on the internet, lost all there pages from the google index. Google is of course totally free to do so.

Directories have always been a source for Google to find web sites and get a basic value tag for them, as long the human reviewer does his job well. Many directories are very well maintained, many directories have whole teams of people who actually rewrite each description to make sure the directory has 100% unique content.

Of course, we all know that there are thousands of directories online. Much more then what makes any sense. Most of them exist purely for the whole link building industry. Obviously Google is fully aware of it. Still, even after removing thousands of directories out of their index; they still accept a couple of thousand more directories to remain in the index. Why. Well, for a bunch of reasons of course. The most important reason; because google needs these directories! Google uses the directories to find new sites themselves and to have a tool to get a first impression of the new sites. For google to determine which directories they can trust is of course crucial. Well, they achieved it!

How hard can it be for Google to know that a site is in fact a directory? And categorizing them and labeling with their value system, that’s just work, not much more. For Google to know whether or not the information they can get from those directories is reliable, is just as easy as any of the other steps Google needs to take to have thousands of human directory reviewers working for them also human filter … for free. Believe me, Google loves directories.

What about those hundreds, even thousands of totally crappy bad directories? Just ignore them! Even if that means you can only use about 20% of the directories, we’re still talking about hundreds, even thousands of directories. Ok, niche directories included. In fact, the average value of just a few niche directories is much higher than those thousands of crap general directories all together.

So, what we conclude so far?
Although the vast majority of the directories out there are total crap, the small remaining minority is still, very, very big. At least 1.000 of the free general directories are still totally worth it to submit to. The top 300 are in fact very high value, quality directories of which a link still is simply a must. Is the link value less than before? Well, I honestly don’t think so. Why? Google has no interest in devaluing the decent directories, simply because big G needs them.

What Google is up to is very much the same as it did with the whole link exchange issue. Google is just weeding out the crap. Google is not discrediting the concept of a directory as a linking tool. Google has just become much better using the real value of the whole directory landscape. That’s all there is too it.
